Summary

This is the first of three young adult novels from New York Times best-selling author Mackenzi Lee that explores the untapped potential and duality of heroism of popular characters in the Marvel Universe。

Before the days of going toe-to-toe with the Avengers, a younger Loki is desperate to prove himself heroic and capable, while it seems everyone around him suspects him of inevitable villainy and depravity 。 。 。 except for Amora。 Asgard's resident sorceress-in-training feels like a kindred spirit-someone who values magic and knowledge, who might even see the best in him。

But when Loki and Amora cause the destruction of one of Asgard's most prized possessions, Amora is banished to Earth, where her powers will slowly and excruciatingly fade to nothing。 Without the only person who ever looked at his magic as a gift instead of a threat, Loki slips further into anguish and the shadow of his universally adored brother, Thor。

When Asgardian magic is detected in relation to a string of mysterious murders on Earth, Odin sends Loki to investigate。 As he descends upon nineteenth-century London, Loki embarks on a journey that leads him to more than just a murder suspect, putting him on a path to discover the source of his power-and who he's meant to be。

I have read this book once before and I'm re-reading it, it's just so good! I would recommend it for any Marvel lover or someone new to Marvel。 Some of the names are a bit tricky to pronounce, but otherwise, it's really good。 I have read this book once before and I'm re-reading it, it's just so good! It was OK。 Entertaining, but the prose was really bland。 Worth reading if you're a massive MCU fan, not if you're a Mackenzi Lee fan though。 It was OK。 Entertaining, but the prose was really bland。 Worth reading if you're a massive MCU fan, not if you're a Mackenzi Lee fan though。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This sounds insane, and it is, but in the time span of 3 months, I read this book from start to finish three times。 (And I revisited some of my favorite parts, like chapter 34)First, at the Royal Feast, we got the classic Thor and Loki bickering。 But we also had Amora!!!! And it was so cool because LOKI WEARS HEELED BOOTS。 HE PAINTS HIS NAILS BLACK。 LIKE HOW COOL IS THAT??? BADASSSSSS!!!!!! He was so confident and I loved that。 But also it wasn’t always liek that thru the whole book。 Not even 10 This sounds insane, and it is, but in the time span of 3 months, I read this book from start to finish three times。 (And I revisited some of my favorite parts, like chapter 34)First, at the Royal Feast, we got the classic Thor and Loki bickering。 But we also had Amora!!!! And it was so cool because LOKI WEARS HEELED BOOTS。 HE PAINTS HIS NAILS BLACK。 LIKE HOW COOL IS THAT??? BADASSSSSS!!!!!! He was so confident and I loved that。 But also it wasn’t always liek that thru the whole book。 Not even 10 pages in I really wanted to give Loki a million hugs。 “He had tried to make himself a warrior, tried to run faster and train harder, learn to take a blow without buckling。 All the things Thor seemed to do without trying, the skills they had been told were most becoming of a future king of Asgard, while Loki’s only skill seemed to be turing the mead in his brother’s goblet into slugs once he began to drink, and then back into wine when he spat it out。” Like that quote was so SAD。 And then he sees that Thor and Frigga are both wearing head piece thingys and he feels bad because he said no to his。 Back to the story line, Karnilla uses her magic to help Odin look into the Godseye Mirror。 And then all these royal ppl rush out so Loki being Loki goes to find out and he disguised himself and overhears that his father saw one of his sons leading an army of dead people against Asgard。 And Loki knows it’s him。 Thor even says it’s probably him, which is so PAINFUL TO ME。 And it hurts Loki too。 Loki is so torn and feels like it won’t be him but it could and AhhhhhSo loki finds amora to go see what his dad saw AND THEN THEY SHATTER THE FODDAMN MIRROR HDIDDUDJDHJ。 AND THEN THEY RELEASE THE LURKING UNKNOWN AND ALMOST DIE。 and then odin was so MEAN AND DIDNT LISTEN TO LOKI AND BANISHED AMORA TK EARTH。 AND LOKI BEGGED AND CRIED LOOK ST THIS QUOTE: “‘Father, please!’ Loki cried, struggling to his knees, hating the look of supplication but unable to stand fast enough without tipping over。 ‘I’m complicit as well。’Odin did not look at him。 ‘Stay back, my son。’‘Then arrest me too!’ Loki cried, his voice breaking。 “I was trespassing; it was my idea’” HELP。 NOT OKAY。 SAD LOKI = SAD ME。 I WAS CRYING ISTFG。 。。。more

Just more proof that when it comes to Loki, Marvel isn't the problem。 Disney is。This books offers the best characterization (aside from the comics) and an inside look at Loki's thoughts and experiences, much better than everything else we've received when it comes to movies and TV shows。 It also doesn't shy away from LGBT representation and some period-typical sexism and homophobia。 In the very first chapter we have Loki rocking thigh high boots with gloriously high heels, and that mental image Just more proof that when it comes to Loki, Marvel isn't the problem。 Disney is。This books offers the best characterization (aside from the comics) and an inside look at Loki's thoughts and experiences, much better than everything else we've received when it comes to movies and TV shows。 It also doesn't shy away from LGBT representation and some period-typical sexism and homophobia。 In the very first chapter we have Loki rocking thigh high boots with gloriously high heels, and that mental image had me hooked。 The book was surprisingly less tame than I expected。 Overall a very solid read about one of my favorite characters。 。。。more

Was pretty eh for a good chunk of the book but in the last 50-100 pages things go insane and I absolutely love it。 Read it solely for the ending。 I did not put this book down through those last pages。 The story and characterization is fairly bland so if you're not looking for any crazy deep writing and an easy read this is really good for that。 Was pretty eh for a good chunk of the book but in the last 50-100 pages things go insane and I absolutely love it。 Read it solely for the ending。 I did not put this book down through those last pages。 The story and characterization is fairly bland so if you're not looking for any crazy deep writing and an easy read this is really good for that。 。。。more

Loved how this felt like it tied in nicely with the current MCU as well as expends the characters already established in the comics。 Lots of what I saw as Easter eggs made me smile。 The lines the characters spoke were insightful and witty, laughing many times myself at their antics。

Lotte

It was a really good book! Especially the last 100 pages were phenomenal。 I thought it was a bit slow in the middle but it didn’t last very long。 I would definitely recommend reading this if you’re a marvel fan! There are also some references to the movies in this book。

i LOVED learning more about loki’s youth and teenage years, including his relationships (especially with frigga, amora and theo)。 plot was alright but ending was a bit off。 black nail polish。

I felt for him in how he always has to constantly prove himself to be “good” and always living in Thor’s shadow and the way Odin just looks down on him for how darks his edges are。 It broke my heart。 But I also just need more, MORE LOKI PLEASE?! I will 100% be rewatching Loki now and sobbing the entire time。This book was so much more than I expected。 Especially Theo’s storyline, that very touching。 And I would of loved to see it explored more especially how Loki comes into play。Another line that just resonated with me was;“But Frigga was not his Father’s。 She was her own” 🥲Marvel fans just read this asap。 ✨ 。。。more

the best way that I can describe this book (and I promise this is a compliment) is that it's a highly detailed and well thought-out Loki fanfic。 Loki is one of my FAVORITE characters in the MCU, so when his name caught my eye on the spine of a book, you know I had to grab it。I read this book in 2 days, because like most fanfictions, it was a very easy read, but still had such a great plot that I would marvel (haha I'm so funny) at how well the different aspects fit together。 Lee wrote Loki's voi the best way that I can describe this book (and I promise this is a compliment) is that it's a highly detailed and well thought-out Loki fanfic。 Loki is one of my FAVORITE characters in the MCU, so when his name caught my eye on the spine of a book, you know I had to grab it。I read this book in 2 days, because like most fanfictions, it was a very easy read, but still had such a great plot that I would marvel (haha I'm so funny) at how well the different aspects fit together。 Lee wrote Loki's voice perfectly, and the other characters were all their own and great。 And, 19th century London。 I'm sold。 I also loved the major theme in this book surrounding the question of how much we truly know about ourselves and what fate can decide。 Again, as somebody who loved the background we got from the Loki TV show, this was just a little gem that I'm so happy I found。 While I can see why this isn't an uber popular book, for a crazy Marvel fan like me, this is all I can ask for and more for what it is: another accurate, funny, and mischievous story about my favorite God of Mischief :) 。。。more

This book is a great character study of Loki。 It shows his physchology and really demonstrates his familial dynamic and how he works。 He is not a simple character, yet somewhat predictable in his actions。 Loved it。 Very true to who he is。 And the others that played a roll in how he became who he is ♥️

This book is written just as one imagines Loki thinks in the movies。 While it wasn’t a hard read, it was just what the Marvel fan ordered。 Following Loki’s path as he grows in his fathers court, this book includes the shaping of Loki into the villain who attacked New York later on。 With enough Easter eggs to satiate anyone, this book is a fun, quick read。 This book questions destiny and the role it plays in shaping your story, with one of Marvel’s most destiny obsessed characters。
